FULLERTON : Police Warn of Scam in Officer’s Name

Share

Police warned the public Wednesday to beware of a man who is soliciting money by falsely claiming to represent a foundation collecting donations for the family of slain Fullerton police officer Tommy De La Rosa.

Police say the man is calling businesses throughout the county, saying he is collecting money for De La Rosa’s family and claiming to represent the California Peace Officer Memorial Foundation.

“As far as we know there is no such organization,” Fullerton Police Capt. Lee DeVore said.

De La Rosa was shot to death in an ambush by suspected drug dealers last week during an undercover narcotics investigation.

Police were alerted to the apparent scam by officials from Sunwest Bank in Fullerton, who called the department after being solicited.

Police said people receiving such a call should report it to their local police department.

Anybody who wants to make a contribution to help the slain officer’s family can do so by sending a donation to the De La Rosa Fund, Fullerton Police Officers’ Assn., 237 W. Commonwealth Ave., Fullerton, CA 92632.
