DWP Agrees to Cut Back on Travel, Tour Costs

Under orders from Mayor Tom Bradley, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power commissioners agreed Thursday to revise their executive travel policy in an effort to cut back on expensive charter jet flights. The department spent more than $700,000 on such flights in the last year.

The board also agreed to continue a moratorium on the agency’s controversial tour program. The DWP spent more than $900,000 in 1989 to entertain politicians and community leaders on tours of its facilities in Utah, Arizona and Northern California.

The board gave its final approval to a $2.9-billion budget for fiscal 1990-1991 that includes no rate increases. The budget, which takes effect Sunday, expands the life-line rates program for low-income customers and includes contributions to the city’s general fund of $111 million.
