Second-Seeded Turner Eliminated in Shutout
San Diego’s Brian Turner, the second seeded player and 1988 men’s open singles champion, didn’t win a game and was ousted from the 74th Annual La Jolla Tennis Tournament Saturday in the round of 16.
Turner lost to Glendale’s Todd Ricka, 6-0, 6-0, at the La Jolla Tennis Club.
Other seeded players advancing in the men’s open singles were No. 3 Steve Dawson of San Diego, No. 7 John Steel of La Jolla and No. 5 John Jeffries of San Diego.
Solvang’s Lisa Seeman, the top-seeded player in women’s open singles and runner-up last year, easily defeated Megan Lowrey of San Diego, 6-2, 6-2. Third-seeded Sondra Mitchell of La Mesa, the open champion in 1988, and fifth-seeded Tonya Fuller of San Diego also advanced to today’s quarterfinals, beginning at 9 a.m.
The semifinals and finals will be played next weekend. The junior portion of the tournament will be held Monday through Friday.
SOCCER
The San Diego Nomads will meet Arizona at 7:30 tonight at Southwestern College in Chula Vista. In their first meeting this season, the Nomads (4-7) defeated the Condors (4-7) in Mesa, 3-1.
Wes Wade of the MISL champion Sockers will suit up for Arizona, which has two key players out with injuries.
