THOUSAND OAKS : Teacher Announces Council Candidacy

Share

A Thousand Oaks teacher who describes herself as an environmentalist has announced that she is running for a City Council seat in the November election.

Colleen A. Briner-Schmidt, a reading specialist at Maple Elementary School, said she wants to serve on the council to make sure development does not overrun the community.

“I want to uphold the reasons we chose to live here in the first place--the clean air, well-managed growth, open spaces, beautiful hillsides and ridgelines,” Briner-Schmidt said. “I believe in the controls the people of Thousand Oaks have placed on development so that it will progress slowly, with thought to the overall community and services.”

Elections will be held in November for three seats, including those held by Mayor Alex Fiore, and Councilmen Larry Horner and Tony Lamb. Fiore and Horner are expected to run for reelection.

Briner-Schmidt, who has lived in Thousand Oaks for seven years, is the first person to announce her candidacy. She is a member of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy Advisory Committee and the president of the Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library.

She has served on various committees at the library and at Maple Elementary School, where she obtained an $8,000 grant for a new computer lab and reading program.
