Marion Newkirk; Community Activist
Marion Hughes Newkirk, an area activist who served as president of the Friday Morning Club from 1957 to 1961 and who also founded Operation Moral Upgrade, a group of women concerned with what they saw as the fading moral standards of the day, is dead.
Mrs. Newkirk was 86 when she died June 25. She had also served on the board of Los Angeles Beautiful and with the Los Angeles chapter of the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge.
Widow of Van C. Newkirk, she is survived by a daughter, Loralie M. Simpson, three grandsons and two great-grandchildren.
