Benefit Dinner Raises $25,000 for L.I.F.E.

Love is Feeding Everyone received $25,000 from a benefit dinner sponsored by Chef and Child Foundation and the Chef De Cuisine Assn. of California, along with Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel. The event was held June 4 at the hotel. L.I.F.E. helps to feed approximately 60,000 people in the Los Angeles area each week.

* Southern California Counseling Center’s black-tie event, “A Magical Evening,” with magicians, silent auction, dinner and dancing, was held June 8 at the Tower at Century Plaza. Net proceeds of $63,000 will be used to continue maintenance and operation of the counseling center.

* The Assistance League of Southern California Children’s Club was presented a $10,000 grant June 1 by the American Express Philanthropic Program. The Children’s Club provides after-school care for children.

* Long Beach Memorial Medical Center held its annual Champions Run for Life torch relay June 9 followed by a black-tie evening aboard the California Hornblower Yacht. The event netted $153,000 to be used for research and treatment of children’s cancer.

* Hadassah University Hospital’s Vivian Barak, Ph.D., and Dr. Zina Ben Ishay will receive fellowship grants to conduct leukemia research at the hospital in Jerusalem. The $18,000 for the grants was raised by Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) at a membership reception June 10 at Every Picture Tells a Story art gallery and bookstore in West Hollywood. The gallery also contributed a portion of the day’s sales to ICRF.

* Motion Picture and Television Fund received a check for $72,305, proceeds from the annual Heartbeat of Hollywood Golf Classic held June 11 at the Calabasas Golf and Country Club. Proceeds will be used to purchase medical equipment for cataract removal.

* Saint Joseph Medical Center’s Robertson Tower/Comprehensive Cancer Center received $350,000 June 12 from the Medical Center Guild at the guild’s installation tea at Pickwick Center in Burbank. The money is part of the guild’s 1987 pledge of $2 million toward construction of the center.

* Braille Institute has been awarded a $100,000 grant from Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities to produce a series of educational videos. The series is designed for families with visually impaired children, and for health-care specialists and educators.

* Southern California Ballet of the Sun’s “Imperial Russian Tea” celebrating “Tatiana Riabouchinska Lichine Day” was held June 19 in the garden of Daniel and Shelby Kirsch. The benefit was attended by more than 150 guests and raised $25,000 for the Performing Arts Center at MacArthur Park. Pat Crowley, Shelby Kirsch and Joan Agajanian Quinn were hosts.

* Los Angeles Regional Food Bank received eight tons of food collected at its annual Project Robinhood party June 23 at Mercedes-Benz of Hollywood. The food bank redistributes food to more than 200,000 impoverished area residents every week through a network of 500 local charities. Each of the more than 1,100 guests brought $25 worth of groceries for admission. Project Robinhood was founded by Toni Benson, Andy Cohen, Ben Freiberger, Marc Gurvitz, Ric Militi, Adam Mills, Joe Rice and Wayne Rice.
