Policeman Spared Injury by Air Bag

An air bag was credited with preventing serious injury to a policeman early Saturday morning when a collision destroyed his patrol car and critically injured the other driver.

San Diego police said Sgt. Charles Kindred escaped with bruised ribs, neck pain and a chipped tooth when a vehicle ran a stop sign at 49th Street and Federal Boulevard about 2 a.m. and hit the patrol car. Air bags are standard on the newest patrol cars, a police spokesman said.

The driver of the other car was identified as James R. Boone. He was in critical condition at UC San Diego Medical Center.

Police said Boone’s car was southbound on 49th and Kindred’s was westbound on Federal.
