Stewart Wins Clemente Award
For Oakland right-hander Dave Stewart, what he does off the field is just as important as what he does on it.
Stewart today was named the recipient of the 20th Roberto Clemente Award. The award is presented annually to the player who best exemplifies the game both on and off the field.
The pitcher, an Oakland native, has given time and money to schools, the United Way, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the MS Society of Northern California. He also sponsors several youth softball and baseball teams.
After the earthquake in the Bay Area last Oct. 17, Stewart spent time helping those who lost their homes. He also helped rescuers at the collapsed Cypress Freeway.
Clemente was killed in 1972 when he was on his way to help earthquake victims in Nicaragua and the small airplane he was riding in crashed.
Stewart was a 20-game winner the last three seasons and pitched a no-hitter against Toronto on June 29.
