A police officer shot and killed a man who allegedly attacked him with a metal fan after police were called to break up a noisy family dispute, Orange police said today.

The dead man, Ramon Ibarra Ibarra, 27, died at 10 p.m. Monday at Western Medical Center in Orange from wounds sustained in the shooting in his South Lemon Street apartment, Orange Police Officer Mark Camarillo said.

Camarillo said police dispatchers received a call shortly before 9 p.m. that a family fight had broken out at Ibarra’s apartment.

When the officer arrived and attempted to calm down the family members, Ibarra grabbed a fan and “struck the officer in the head,” Camarillo said. The officer then opened fire, Camarillo said, hitting Ibarra. Police declined to identify the officer or say how many shots were fired or where Ibarra was wounded.

Assistant Dist. Atty. Bryan Brown said that his department is investigating the shooting at the request of the Orange Police Department. The district attorney’s office routinely investigates all officer-involved shootings, Brown said.
