The NHL St. Louis Blues continued a brief but frenzied period of rebuilding today, trading center Peter Zezel and defenseman Mike Lalor to the Washington Capitals for left wing Geoff Courtnall.

The deal came about 12 hours after the Blues acquired free-agent defenseman Scott Stevens from the Capitals. Stevens signed a four-year offer sheet worth more than $4 million with the Blues last week, and the Capitals were unwilling to match the sheet and unable to arrange a trade before a midnight Thursday deadline.

The Associated Press, quoting sources close to the situation, had reported Thursday that the Capitals would match the Blues’ offer sheet for Stevens and then trade him to either the Montreal Canadiens or Los Angeles Kings.

“There were strong indications that they were going to make that deal,” one source said. “It apparently fell apart.”
