ROUNDUP : Davidson, Vuong Paddle Their Way to Doubles Medals : Table tennis: North Hollywood woman and partner earn silver; Reseda woman on bronze-medal team.

Carol Davidson of North Hollywood and Lan Vuong of Reseda both earned medals in table tennis Saturday.

But neither got the one she wanted most.

In women’s doubles, Davidson and partner Takako Trenholme of Minneapolis fell to Li Ai of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Kim Gilbert of Los Angeles, 12-21, 21-16, 21-19, in the gold-medal match.

Vuong and partner Kerry Terrel of Richland, Wash., defeated Jane Chui of Bedford, Mass., and Nadine Groenig of Phoenix, Ariz., 21-12, 21-9, for the bronze medal.

Davidson and Trenholme advanced to the semifinals by winning all three round-robin matches earlier in the day.

Marta Zurowski of Dudley, Mass., and Rosario Truelson of Minneapolis fell first, 21-16, 21-17.

Suki Bright of Rome, N.Y., and Joannie Fu of New Brunswick, N.J., also succumbed in straight games, 21-5, 21-15.

Davidson and Trenholme defeated Vuong and Terrel in similar fashion, 21-13, 21-16.

Vuong and Terrel advanced to the semifinals by winning their other two matches, dropping Suki and Bright, 21-13, 21-14, and defeating Zurowski and Truelson, 21-17, 21-16.

FENCING

Avi Friedlich split four of eight bouts in the men’s sabre as the South won a bronze medal in team competition.

Friedlich of Encino won only one of five bouts in the first two rounds of competition, but went 3-0 against opponents from the West in the medal-round matchup.

Friedlich, 19, is a Harvard High graduate who attends UCLA.

SOCCER

Cameron and Matt Rast, brothers from Simi Valley, never wanted to face each other on the soccer field, but the confrontation was forced upon them. Cam was placed on the North team at the Festival while Matt played for the West.

The teams--and brothers--met in the gold-medal match, which the West won, 1-0, as Joey Leonetti of Gladstone, Ore., scored in the 59th minute.
