25 Hurt in Fighting Empire State Blaze
At least 25 firefighters were injured battling flames that broke out at the Empire State Building Monday evening, as heavy smoke belched from the middle and upper floors of the 102-story tower.
About 150 firefighters were sent to the scene. A fire found on the 51st floor was extinguished, but firefighters were searching other floors to determine whether the blaze had erupted at other sites as well, officials said.
The affected floors were evacuated, by both stairways and elevators. The injured firefighters, who suffered smoke inhalation, were in stable condition, said Capt. Charles Wells, spokesman for the Emergency Medical Services.
