VENTURA : Council Delays Vote on Downtown Plans

Share

The Ventura City Council has put off until Monday a vote on a series of changes to its redevelopment plan, which is aimed at giving downtown a face lift.

The council agreed on the postponement after deliberations pushed Monday’s meeting well past midnight.

The revisions to the redevelopment plan that the council will consider would double from 500 to 1,000 the number of residential housing units allowed in the redevelopment district, and allow buildings of up to 75 feet tall or six stories in four city blocks. Developers would have to install benches and fountains in public places to get building permits.

The plan revisions also call for most industrial buildings in the area to be replaced by commercial and residential structures. All new buildings would have to meet stringent design standards and be compatible with the Victorian, Art Deco, Mission or California bungalow styles prevalent in the area.

The redevelopment district is bounded by Fix Way and Poli Street to the north, the Ventura Freeway to the south, Palm Street to the east and California 33 to the west.
