Two men who were rescued from the ocean after clinging to an ice chest for 18 hours remained in serious condition Tuesday, while a Coast Guard vessel continued to search for two other men who were aboard the 14-foot motorboat when it capsized.

Manuel Echeverria, 22, was moved out of intensive care at UCLA Medical Center Tuesday afternoon, hospital sources said, but his companion, Jorge Hernandez, 28, remains in the intensive care unit.

Echeverria and Hernandez were rescued about 2 p.m. Monday by Los Angeles County lifeguards after clinging to an ice chest since 8 p.m. Sunday--a total of 18 hours in 65-degree water. Echeverria, Hernandez and two others left Marina del Rey in a yellow, 14-foot motorboat about 11 a.m. Sunday for a fishing expedition off Malibu. But about 8 p.m., the boat struck a submerged object, and the men were tossed into the sea.
