After three years of charges, countercharges and legal confrontations between owners and players, arbitrator George Nicolau is expected to rule today in New York on baseball’s third collusion case.
Arbitrator Thomas Roberts found owners guilty of conspiring against free agents after the 1985 season, and Nicolau found owners guilty of a conspiracy after the 1986 season. The Collusion III case, as it is known, deals with players who became free agents after the 1987 season.
Among the 76 free agents that off-season were Jack Clark, Gary Gaetti, Dave Righetti, Dave Smith, Jack Morris, Mike Witt and Paul Molitor.
