2 Die in England Bus Crash; 9 Californians Suffer Injuries
A double-decker bus carrying gifted teen-age students from the United States overturned on a highway outside Oxford on Thursday, killing two and injuring all 59 other people aboard, police said.
Some were thrown from windows, some crawled out of the bus, some were later pulled free and at least three were trapped inside for an hour, authorities said. Four people were seriously hurt.
“It was a scene of utter chaos and mayhem,” said ambulance superintendent Robin Finlayson.
Police identified the dead students as 18-year-old Autumn Dubose of Lilburn, Ga., and a 16-year-old boy from New York state whose name was not released pending notification of his family.
The 61 people on the bus included 47 Americans, 5 Britons, 2 Japanese and one each from Canada, France, the Netherlands, Austria, Italy, and Mexico, police said.
Authorities said three passengers from California were hospitalized: Marlene Katzman, 45, no town given; Kristina Kiraly, 17, Santa Barbara; and Sienna Craig, 16, Santa Barbara. Discharged after treatment at local hospitals were Brad Becker, 16, Piedmont; Graeme Gabriel, 17, La Jolla; Liza Katzman, 17, no town given; Gavin Mandelbaum, 17, Larjona; Justin West, 15, Santa Ana; and Charlton Yu, 16, Santa Ana.
