Heavy Hitter Gonzalez to Defend Light-Flyweight Title at Forum

Humberto Gonzalez, Mexico City’s unbeaten light-flyweight champion, defends his title against South Korean Lim Jung Keun tonight at the Forum.

Gonzalez, a hard hitter who has stopped 21 of 27 opponents, is defending his World Boxing Council 108-pound championship for the fourth time. Gonzalez is 27-0, Keun 12-4.

The Forum hopes Gonzalez can become a major attraction. He’s a crowd-pleaser--a powerfully built, 24-year-old who showed considerable power in stopping Luis Monzote in the third round in a June 4 bout in the Forum.

Gonzalez’s promoter, Rafael Mendoza, hopes to match his fighter against Michael Carbajal of Phoenix, should Carbajal capture Muangchai Kittikasem’s International Boxing Federation light-flyweight title July 29 at Phoenix.

In spite of his knockout record, Gonzalez has been taken the distance in two previous fights with South Koreans. He won his title 13 months ago with a decision over Lee Yul Woo in South Korea.

“Korean fighters are very tough,” Gonzalez said. “I will look for a knockout, but I can’t promise anything. I am in very good condition and in each round I will put more pressure on him (Keun) than in the round before.”
