First baseman Don Mattingly was placed on the New York Yankees’ 21-day disabled list, but the club said it’s too early to write him off for the season.
Asked about Mattingly’s chances of playing again this season, Pete Peterson, Yankee vice president and general manager, said: “I certainly hope so, let me put it that way.”
Peterson said the team was waiting to see how Mattingly’s back responded to rest.
Mattingly, 29, returned to his Evansville, Ind., home Thursday.
