Home Society Cooks Up $168,000

Children’s Home Society of California has netted $168,000 from sales of its “Only in California” cookbook since its September release. Proceeds will be used for such services as adoption, child care, foster family care, group home care, family support and shelter care. For information on the book: (213) 389-6750.

* Sickle Cell Disease Research Foundation held its annual fund-raising dinner June 8 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel. The more than $50,000 raised at the event, attended by 500, will be used for ongoing research, education and community services. Sponsors were the Milken Family Foundation, Anheuser-Busch, Southland Corp. and Warner Records.

* Hispanic Easter Seal Telethon raised $90,350, enabling the Easter Seal Society of Los Angeles and Orange counties to expand and improve programs for Latinos. The “Espectacular” was hosted by Martin Cuburu of “Adivinelo con Senas,” a game show, and talk show host Maria Laria. Other hosts were Brandon Scott and Laura Fabian.

* Therapeutic Living Centers for the Blind held its benefit on June 2, a day of magic, a silent auction and luncheon at the Magic Castle. Net proceeds of more than $47,000 will be used to serve developmentally disabled blind adults in a year-round residential facility and day center in Reseda.

* El Nido Services held its “Celebration of Achievement” May 20 at the Shangri-La restaurant. Net proceeds of $21,000 will go for programs of delinquency prevention, child abuse treatment and assistance to children, youth and families.

* Pacific Lodge Boys’ Home received a $50,000 challenge grant from the Weingart Foundation to assist in the renovation of campus facilities. The home is a nonprofit, non-sectarian residential treatment center in Woodland Hills for seriously troubled boys ages 13 through 18.

* Center Theatre Group Volunteers’ “Angel’s Night ‘90,” which supports the Improvisational Theatre Project of the Mark Taper Forum, raised $45,000 at its May 20 benefit. Funds provide free theater programs for children. Kim Peterson and Ellen Price are co-presidents. Gail Newman and Shirley Colby were benefit co-chairs.

* Variety Children’s Charities received a $30,000 check from American Honda’s World of Recreation benefit July 21 and 22 at Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance. Sports activities included off-road motorcycling, basketball, baseball, golf and hockey. Variety proceeds assist underprivileged, handicapped and emotionally disturbed children.

Educational Foundation Program, a branch of the American Assn. of University Women, received $13,500, proceeds from a theater party and book sale, from the San Fernando Valley branch of AAUW. The program makes grants to community projects, national and international fellowships, legal advocacy programs and other projects.
