A 24-year-old man was arrested early Sunday in connection with the shooting of two roommates during a dispute in their apartment, authorities said.

Raul Pineda was being held in the city jail on suspicion of attempted murder, Police Lt. Ray Welch said.

Roommate Francisco Mitre, 32, suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and was in guarded condition at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, officials said.

A second gunshot victim was in fair condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange. Police identified him as 24-year-old Victor Cedano, who was believed to have recently moved from Los Angeles to the apartment in the 400 block of North Rose Street. Hospital officials said he was admitted under the name of Vincent Cedano.

Welch said officers heard gunshots as they arrived at the small apartment complex about 12:45 a.m. Sunday in response to a report of a man with a gun. Moments later, the officers saw an armed man running toward the street and ordered him to halt and drop his weapon.

An onlooker then directed them to an apartment in the complex, where they found the two wounded men.

Welch said the shooting apparently began as an argument in the apartment, but it was not clear what sparked the dispute. An investigation was continuing, he said.
