Headline Writers Have Field Day

Share

George Steinbrenner, known throughout this city for his firing of managers, got fired himself Monday, and the New York press had a field day.

“Baseball commish to George: YER OUT!” said the headline on the front page of the tabloid New York Post. “HE’S NOT THE BOSS,” headlined the back page. Both accompanied full page pictures of Steinbrenner.

The Post didn’t relent. The story on the inside pages had a headline that spanned two pages. “FAY FIRES GEORGE AS YANKEE BOSS.” The sub-headline read: “Goodbye George, Bronx fans chant as despised owner gets old heave-ho,” the sub-headline read.

The headline on the front page of the tabloid New York Daily News said “Gone” atop a picture of Steinbrenner, with the headline “The Boss Gets Thrown Out as Principal Owner of the Yanks” beneath it. The back page featured a picture of Vincent beneath the headline, “Fay-tal Blow.”

Newsday’s front page headline said, “YER OUT,” and the back page’s was simply, “BYE, GEORGE.” Another edition read, “HE’S GONE FOR GOOD!”

The New York Times was far more conservative: “Steinbrenner’s Control of Yanks Severed. “ Subheadline: “Owner’s relationship to ‘known gambler’ is cited by Vincent.”
