SOUTHLAND : Pregnant L.B. Woman Killed by Gang Gunfire; Baby Survives
A pregnant Long Beach woman was killed by gang gunfire early today, but surgeons delivered her premature baby by emergency Cesarean section before she died early today, authorities said.
Kentzie Pope, 31, was hit in the back by a shotgun blast fired from a passing car as she stood in front of an apartment building about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
Pope and several gang members were standing in front of the building, a known hangout for gang members, as the car passed, police said.
Paramedics took Pope, who was eight months pregnant, to St. Mary Medical Center, where doctors delivered a premature baby girl by Cesarean section during emergency surgery, hospital spokeswoman Carolyn Cohen said. The baby weighed just over 4 pounds and is in critical condition, she said.
