South Gate : 3 Officials to Accept Award at White House Ceremony

Three South Gate officials will attend a White House ceremony Monday to accept an All-America City Award plaque, one of 10 to be given to communities that made special efforts to solve local problems.

President George Bush will present the awards to officials from South Gate and nine other cities during a brief 10 a.m. ceremony. A luncheon will be held in the Russell Senate Office Building following the awards presentation.

South Gate Mayor Robert A. Philipp, Vice Mayor Gregory Slaughter and Councilman Larry Leonard will accept the award. The National Civic League selects each year’s recipients.

South Gate was honored for developing programs to create jobs, projects to reduce youth gang activities and bringing Anglo and Latino cultures together.

Bakersfield is the only other California city to receive an award.
