California IN BRIEF : SAN JUAN BAUTISTA : 4.3 Quake Rattles Through Mountains
A moderate earthquake shook the Santa Cruz Mountains, but no injuries or major damage were reported. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the temblor measured magnitude 4.3 and was centered near San Juan Bautista, 75 miles southeast of San Francisco. “It was just enough to rattle things and make the pots swing,” said Linda Parker, a clerk with the Salinas Police Department. The temblor served as another reminder for Northern California residents of the deadly Oct. 17, 1989, Bay Area quake that measured 7.1, killed 67 people and caused billions of dollars in damage.
