2 Home Runs Power Yankees Over Indians
Rookie Kevin Maas broke a sixth-inning tie with his 11th home run in 92 major league at-bats and Roberto Kelly also homered today as the New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians 2-1.
With the score tied 1-1, Mass homered off Greg Swindell (7-7) into the right-field upper deck.
Andy Hawkins (3-9) gave up seven hits in eight innings, walked two and struck out three. Hawkins, who failed to win a game between May 6 and July 27, has won two of his last three decisions. Dave Righetti finished for his 22nd save in 23 opportunities.
Swindell allowed eight hits and struck out eight in eight innings as he pitched his third complete game.
New York, which has won only 43 games this season, has beaten the Indians eight times in 12 games.
First base umpire Terry Craft left the game after being hit in the leg by Dion James’ line drive in the first inning.
Kelly, whose ninth-inning home run won Sunday’s game, gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead in the first with his 10th home run of the season.
