Los Angeles police Monday were investigating the drive-by slaying of a San Pedro man who was gunned down while celebrating his 21st birthday.
Luis Navarro was killed by a single shot fired from a car just before 1 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Gaffey and Sepulveda streets in San Pedro, Detective Tom Lange said. The victim, who authorities say was not a gang member, was pronounced dead at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center shortly after the shooting.
Lange said Navarro left a birthday party in San Pedro with a friend to pick up cigarettes at a liquor store. En route, a car carrying reputed gang members pulled up alongside Navarro’s vehicle and fired a shot that struck him in the head. Navarro’s companion was not injured. “They never saw it coming,” Lange said.
No motive for the shooting had been determined.
