A passenger in a car that stalled on the Santa Monica Freeway was killed when another car struck the vehicle, causing it to careen into the center divider and burst into flames, authorities said Monday.

The name of the victim, a 20-year-old woman, was withheld pending notification of relatives. The woman was a passenger in the car that stalled just before midnight Sunday in the center lane on the Santa Monica Freeway just east of Robertson Boulevard in Los Angeles, said California Highway Patrol Officer John Lessentine.

The car was rear-ended by another vehicle and sent into the center divider wall, bursting into flames, he said. A third car then struck the second car. Other motorists were injured in the collision but the extent of their injuries was not immediately known.
