A 12-year-old boy escorted his 4- and 5-year-old sisters from a burning apartment building on Monday and then dialed 911 for help, fire officials said.

The 8:17 a.m. fire was started by one of the children playing with matches in a bedroom closet. The fire caused about $60,000 damage to the apartment complex at 120 Nisson Road, Orange County Fire Department Spokeswoman Kathleen Cha said. No one was injured.

Cha said the children were home alone when the fire broke out. Fire officials said the boy acted quickly to ensure the safety of his sisters and notify authorities of the blaze.

“He did a real good job of remaining calm and doing the right things,” said Fire Department Capt. Dan Young, who added that the boy had recently completed a junior fire safety program at his school.

Fire officials have not identified which child was playing with matches.

Fire and police officials on Monday were investigating the circumstances of the fire and why the children were left unsupervised.
