AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Blue Jays Thrown for 4-3 Loss, Pushed Two Games Back

Charlie Hough outpitched Dave Stieb and the Texas Rangers threw out two runners on the bases in the ninth inning to hold off the Toronto Blue Jays, 4-3, Monday night at Arlington, Tex.

Toronto went 3-5 on its trip and fell two games behind Boston in the American League East, while Texas won for the seventh time in eight games.

Stieb (14-4) had not given up a run in two victories over the Rangers this season, but was tagged for four runs on seven hits in six innings. He had been 7-0 on the road this season.

Hough (9-7) gave up two runs on six hits in seven innings. He struck out seven and walked two. Kenny Rogers got his 11th save.

Kansas City 5, Chicago 4--Gerald Perry’s double and two errors by catcher Carlton Fisk keyed a five-run third inning that lifted the Royals over the White Sox at Kansas City.

The loss, which snapped the White Sox’s five-game winning streak, dropped Chicago three games behind idle Oakland in the American League West. Melido Perez (10-9) took the loss.

Storm Davis (5-7) gave up five hits in five innings and Jeff Montgomery got his 16th save.

Perry made it 4-0 with his two-run double to right, giving him six RBIs in his last 11 games.

Milwaukee 6, Minnesota 0--Ron Robinson broke Milwaukee’s eight-game losing streak by pitching his first major league shutout, leading the Brewers past the Twins at Minneapolis.

Robinson (5-3) pitched a six-hitter, struck out two and walked one.

Dave Parker and B.J. Surhoff each had three of Milwaukee’s 14 hits and Paul Molitor had two doubles.

Roy Smith (5-10) fell to 1-4 since returning to the rotation June 26.

New York 2, Cleveland 1--Rookie Kevin Maas broke a sixth-inning tie with his 11th home run to lead the Yankees to a victory over the Indians at New York.

Mass homered off Greg Swindell (7-7), who struck out eight and gave up eight hits, including another homer by Roberto Kelly.

New York’s Andy Hawkins (3-9) gave up seven hits in eight innings, walked two and struck out three. Hawkins, who failed to win a game between May 6 and July 27, has won two of his last three decisions.
