THE SIDELINES : Buffalo Bid for Expos Weighed
If the Montreal Expos are still for sale after Sept. 1, Robert E. Rich Jr. will consider making a pitch for them.
Rich, the frozen-food magnate who owns Buffalo’s minor-league Bisons and is leading the city’s drive for an expansion team, issued a statement confirming publicly for the first time that he will consider trying to buy the Expos, presumably to bring them to Buffalo.
“We are honoring Charles Bronfman’s deadline of Sept. 1 to find a local buyer,” Rich said in a prepared statement. “We will be interested after Sept. 1.” He was not available for further comment.
Bronfman, the Expos’ owner, last week announced he will consider offers from outsiders after Sept. 1 if a Quebec buyer had not emerged by then.
A Miami-based group of investors has offered about $115 million for the National League East club.
