The remains of a woman discovered by hikers near Roseburg, Ore., have been identified through dental records as those of a Long Beach resident who vanished almost two years ago, authorities said Wednesday.

The remains, found by hikers May 31 on private forest land 30 miles southeast of Roseburg, were identified as those of Estella D. Vaughan, 46, who was reported missing from the Long Beach area in October, 1988, said Detective Joe Perkins of the Douglas County major crimes unit. He said the case is being treated as a homicide.

The identification of the woman also involved a nationwide computer search, Perkins said. Police had asked for the public’s help in determining the woman’s whereabouts before her death.
