Council Doesn’t Deserve Pay Raise

Share

Immediately after the June elections, a Long Beach councilman was quoted in your paper as saying that he wanted to put the failed ballot issues on police protection and salary raises for the City Council back as November ballot issues. I think he forgot that the people have spoken and defeated the measures.

Now we hear about a proposal for an ethics panel that can grant raises to the council members (“L.B. Council Refuses to Put Ethics Package on Ballot,” Long Beach edition, Aug. 2). Luckily, common sense prevailed and some honest members on the Long Beach City Council realize that it would be an “end run” around an issue that voters had defeated. Most taxpayers have to earn a raise in their jobs and can’t just get an appointed panel to return a favor and grant members a raise.

Long Beach is no longer a small sleepy town where “good old boys” politics can continue. We the voters are the same people they work for and we don’t think they deserve a raise yet.
