Baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent made a deal to help gambler Howard Spira in exchange for evidence against George Steinbrenner, a lawyer for the Yankees’ suspended owner charged.
Robert E. Banker of Tampa, Fla., said he thinks Vincent is trying to discredit the eight-count federal indictment against Spira, who is accused of threatening to harm and attempting to extort the owner.
Vincent and Spira denied the accusations.
