Motorcyclist Killed While Trying Stunt

A man on a borrowed motorcycle was killed Wednesday morning in Sun Valley when he lost control while apparently attempting a high-speed stunt, Los Angeles police reported.

Police said John Angel, 23, of Sun Valley died at 1:20 a.m. when the motorcycle went over backward while he was attempting a wheelie--a stunt in which the rider raises the front wheel of the motorcycle.

Angel was killed when his head struck the pavement on Vineland Avenue just south of Strathern Street. Officer Leona Thomas said an autopsy will determine if he had been driving while intoxicated.

Thomas said Angel, who was not wearing a helmet, had borrowed the motorcycle from a neighbor and was apparently driving south on Vineland at an undetermined speed when he attempted the wheelie, drifted into the northbound lanes and crashed.
