From Times staff and Wire reports

The lingering drought has claimed about 15% of the Tahoe Basin’s trees and the U.S. Forest Service has tripled its wood-cutting operations here this summer as a result. Logging companies normally are allowed to cut about 4 million board feet of green wood a year, but this year have been allowed to remove more than 12 million board feet of dead or dying trees.
