SURFING : O’Connell Defeats Andino in Malibu
Pat O’Connell of Laguna Niguel defeated Dino Andino of San Clemente on Sunday in the finals of the Croakies Malibu Surf Classic at Surfrider Beach.
It was O’Connell’s second victory this year on the Professional Surfing Assn. of America tour. It was the third consecutive second-place finish this year for the tour-leading Andino, who entered the event in Malibu as the three-time defending champion.
Richie Collins of Newport Beach was defeated by Tom Curren, formerly of Santa Barbara, now of France, in the finals of the Quicksilver Lacanau Pro surfing competition Sunday in Lacanau, France.
Curren scored 82.8 points to Collins’ 70, giving Curren his third victory over Collins this year.
