The city of Laguna Beach is soliciting applications from artists for a three-dimensional sculpture to be placed at Loma Terrace, near the intersection of Forest Avenue and 3rd Street. The piece must incorporate water, be sensitive to water conservation, and be made of materials that can withstand prolonged exposure to sun and salt air.

The $27,200 budget--intended to cover the artist’s fabrication and installation--represents 1% of the cost of remodeling Laguna Beach City Hall, the amount required to be set aside in accordance with the city’s Art in Public Places program.

Entries must be received by 5 p.m. Sept. 14 at the office of Phillip Hoffman, staff liaison to the Arts Commission, 505 Forest Ave. All submissions will be reviewed by a 10-member preliminary selection committee, including Charles Desmarais, director of the Laguna Art Museum; Laguna Beach City Council member Neil Fitzpatrick; Maudette Ball, administrator of the Foothill Ranch Urban Arts Program; and Joe Souvella, a community education instructor at the Art Institute of Southern California in Laguna Beach.

The committee will choose five semifinalists to recommend to the Arts Commission, which will select two finalists. The City Council will choose the winning project. Dedication of the sculpture is scheduled for summer 1991. A prospectus and detailed entry information is available at the Laguna Beach Arts Commission: (714) 497-0311.
