Equity Officials, Producer to Meet on ‘Saigon’ Issues

A summit meeting between Actors’ Equity officials and “Miss Saigon” producer Cameron Mackintosh will be held in New York in early September, in an attempt to resolve the controversy over the casting of the proposed Broadway production, Equity announced today.

The Equity statement predicted that “a dialogue . . . rather than further press releases, will prove to be salutary.”

Mackintosh canceled the production Aug. 8 after members of the Actors’ Equity council voted to bar British actor Jonathan Pryce from playing the key role of a Eurasian pimp.

After a reversal of the council vote on a technicality Tuesday, Mackintosh said he still wouldn’t bring the hit musical to Broadway until the union had a “change of heart” about Pryce’s casting.
