NBC Accuses Iraq of Censorship

Share

NBC News has charged that its correspondents were not allowed into Iraq in an attempt to censor the network because of past reports on the country’s military buildup and use of poison gas.

Ted Koppel and Forrest Sawyer of ABC News and Dan Rather of CBS News were granted visas to report from Baghdad. All eventually were asked to leave.

Don Browne, executive vice president of NBC News, said in a statement Wednesday that NBC News requested visas to enter Baghdad on Aug. 3, the morning after Iraq invaded Kuwait.

“We can only conclude that we are being censored by the Iraq government -- singled out because of a series of exclusive reports on NBC Nightly News.”

He said that despite this, NBC News “will continue to cover the situation in the Middle East fairly and objectively.”
