Rain forced another delay in the Little League World Series today, but organizers hoped to rebuild the infield and finish games that would keep the tournament on course for a Saturday afternoon world championship game.

“The field’s pretty bad in several locations,” Little League spokesman Steve Keener said. “We’re essentially going to rebuild the infield.”

Grounds crews lifted the tarp from the field and worked underneath, cutting out sections of the basepaths and infield that were waterlogged. If dry dirt was found underneath, it would be brought to the surface. Dry dirt from elsewhere was standing by just in case.

“We will not cancel the World Series,” Keener said, adding that it could be Sunday, Monday or even Tuesday before the title game is played. “We will undertake major efforts to get the field ready.”

Shippensburg, Pa., and Mobile, Ala., were scheduled to resume a suspended game this morning, but a steady drizzle made the field unmanageable.
