Share

The Santa Monica Police Department has been recognized as the best-dressed department for a force under 200 officers in a national contest sponsored by a uniform manufacturer.

The National Assn. of Uniform Manufacturers and Distributors annually recognizes the best-dressed police departments in five categories based on size and type of police agency. Last year, Beverly Hills was a runner-up.

Santa Monica also received another award from a state agency: a $795,695 grant to build a youth center at Memorial Park.

The grant from the California Youth Authority will be used to build a 9,300-square-foot facility with a gym, lounge, weight and exercise room and two classrooms.

The facility, which is expected to be completed in about two years, will be for the exclusive use of the department’s Police Activities League. The PAL program is designed to provide program for youths as an alternative to gangs.
