Jill Trenary, three-time U.S. national champion and defending world champion, will remain in competitive figure skating through the 1992 Winter Olympics, she announced Thursday.

There was speculation that Trenary, 22, might retire to join a professional ice show, but she said at a news conference that she wants a chance to win an Olympic medal. She was fourth in the 1988 Winter Games at Calgary.

She also said she will remain for most of the year in Colorado Springs, where she has trained for the last seven years, although her coaches, Carlo and Christa Fassi, are moving to Milan, Italy.
