THE SIDELINES : Grand Prix Showdown Looms
Austrian Gerhard Berger dominated today’s qualifying session for the Belgian Grand Prix, beating world champion Alain Prost of France for the provisional pole position.
Prost edged Berger’s McLaren-Honda teammate Ayrton Senna of Brazil for second place. Prost’s Ferrari partner, Nigel Mansell of Britain, finished fourth, setting up two McLaren-Ferrari front rows on the grid.
The final qualifying session is Saturday.
After 10 of 16 Grand Prix races, Senna leads the driver standings with 54 points. He is followed by Prost with 44, Berger with 29 and local favorite Thierry Boutsen with 27. Senna was world champion in 1988.
Senna, the all-time leader in pole positions, has won only one of the last five Grand Prix races. Last year, he won 13 of 16.
