Public Meeting to Air Rockwell Cleanup Plan

The U.S. Department of Energy will hold a public meeting Thursday on its cleanup plan for Rockwell International’s Santa Susana Field Laboratory west of Chatsworth.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 to 10 p.m. in the Simi Valley Council Chambers, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road.

The Department of Energy has proposed spending about $35 million through fiscal 1996 to remove chemical and radioactive contamination from the soil and buildings at Santa Susana, where Rockwell did nuclear work for the government from the 1950s until 1986.

Funds will also be used to improve pollution controls at the Energy Technology Engineering Center at Santa Susana, where Rockwell continues to experiment with non-nuclear components of nuclear reactors.

Contamination at Santa Susana has provoked bitter controversy, but officials with Rockwell, DOE and environmental agencies have said it poses no direct risk to workers or the public.
