An Anaheim police officer shot and wounded a suspected burglar today after a high-speed freeway chase.
The suspect, Gilbert Lopez, 19, of Anaheim was shot once in the chest after he allegedly attacked the unidentified officer with a screwdriver, Anaheim Police Sgt. Chet Barry said.
Lopez was listed in serious condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange. The officer was not injured in the brief struggle that took place just before the 3:40 a.m. shooting.
Barry said two officers were investigating an alarm at a department store when they spotted a car speeding away with two young men inside. The police car chased the suspected burglars to Euclid Avenue and the Santa Ana Freeway, where the car flipped and landed upside down.
Barry said the suspects climbed out of the wrecked car and began running. He said Lopez was shot during a confrontation with the officer at 300 N. Manchester Ave.
A 16-year-old juvenile, whose name was withheld because of his age, was found by officers a short time later hiding in a commercial storage area, Barry said.
