Schools Extending Weekend, Afternoon Recreation Hours

Extended afternoon and weekend recreation hours will be available this school year at 306 elementary and junior high schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The school board recently voted to accept $3.5 million from the Los Angeles City Council to help fund the program, which features supervised recreation activities after school until 6 p.m. and at some schools on the weekend.

The schools were selected because they are in areas where parks and recreation facilities are inadequate, according to a written release from district spokeswoman Ria Parody.

All neighborhood children, whether or not they are enrolled in the school, are eligible to attend.
