Wimbledon Doubles Champions Lose
How big an upset was it?
Wimbledon champions Rick Leach and Jim Pugh, the top-seeded doubles team, lost their first-round match to Nelson Aerts and Danilo Marcelino of Brazil, who had never played together before.
Aerts and Marcelino won, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5).
“Well, it’s the end of the summer,” Leach said. “And after winning such a big tournament, there’s been a little bit of a letdown.”
Leach and Pugh, who also have two Australian Open doubles titles, will play for the United States in the Davis Cup semifinal match against Austria.
