COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Loses Twice in Volleyball Tournament

UC Irvine lost to host Arizona State, 15-4, 15-9, 8-15, 15-10, in the Sun Devil Labor Day volleyball tournament Saturday in Tempe, Ariz.
Scotleen Risley had nine kills for Irvine. In an earlier match, UC Irvine lost to Cal State Northridge, 15-12, 15-10, 15-4. Kris Cuttler had nine kills for Irvine (1-3).
In the Christ College Irvine Labor Day Festival, UC San Diego won the championship by defeating Cal Poly Pomona, 16-14, 15-12. UC San Diego was led by junior middle-blocker Elizabeth Tan.
Christ College Irvine’s Miriam Paulus, a senior middle blocker, shared tournament MVP honors with Point Loma Nazarene’s LeAnne Lopez.
Southern California College’s Heather Frewin, a senior middle blocker, and Leslie Lastrapes, a junior outside hitter were named to the all-tournament team.
In the Western Kentucky men’s soccer tournament:
Cal State Fullerton 4, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville 1--Raul Haro scored on a penalty kick and assisted on two other goals and Steve George scored one goal and assisted on another to lead Cal State Fullerton (1-0). George, Paul Rottenberg and Todd Patrick scored in the second half to to help Fullerton overcome a 1-1 halftime score.
In men’s nonconference soccer:
Cal State Northridge 1, UC Irvine 0--Cal State Northridge (1-0) sophomore defender Teddy Davila scored at 5:25 mark of second half. Irvine (0-2) goalie Mike Gartlan had three saves and Northridge goalie Joel Entreken had one save.
In women’s nonconference soccer:
UC Santa Barbara 3, UC Irvine 0--Trisha Kimble scored twice and Lara Nesbitt scored once to lead Santa Barbara.
