Reducing Class Sizes in California

What mean-spirited actions Gov. Deukmejian has taken (Part A, Aug. 24). Now, in the waning days of his Administration, we can see the effects of his bitterness. On one hand, he wants to improve his image after his unwarranted budget cuts. On the other, he blames his victims for his own lack of compassion. Like some present-day leaders, he confuses intransigence and aggression with strength and courage. At a time when teachers are regaining the status they deserve, the governor retreats to criticism of bygone days.

To refute his tired old cant is useless. The testimony of teachers who stay in the profession when they could be earning more in other careers would fall on deaf ears. To recount the needs of students and the concerns of parents would be futile.

This is not really a matter of money. The issue is one of concern for people. Who will have the greater effect on raising hopes and enabling people to achieve their dreams: the governor or the teachers?
