Temple City : Plan to Block Mall Rejected
Angry residents yelled “Sold out!” and “Despicable!” at City Council members who scrapped a plan that would have blocked construction of a mini-mall.
Even though the developer had obtained all necessary city approvals for his project, the council in July considered buying the property from him and building a parking lot on it instead. However, the council last month decided that the cost of acquiring the land--about $1 million--would be too high.
About 40 Oak Avenue residents packed the council meeting Tuesday. Their representatives spoke for more than an hour about their objections to the planned mall just north of Las Tunas Drive on Oak Avenue, and presented a petition opposing the development.
Councilwoman Bobbie McGowan moved that the city buy the property, but the motion died for lack of a second. The council then voted to create an ad-hoc committee to study mini-malls.
